All things must pass. Including my favorite magazine, Home Miami. I lost count of how many covers I shot over the years, but it must have been 20 or so, including this one of Philip Johnson’s iconic Glass House. What a crying shame. Started by John O’ Connor and then taken over by Bonnier Corporation, the magazine catered to a design savvy audience and though it was supposedly a local magazine,  its influence spread far and wide and was read in many areas of the globe.  The mag had real personality…a reflection of the founder’s vision and really helped to educate a whole class of people from different walks of life about the value of good design and the necessity of historic preservation. We have lost a good voice for sustainable urban living and it seems there are no replacements on the horizon. Yes, there will be a web version, but some things like good design require a tactile and tectonic solidity which only the printed word and printed photograph can communicate. Beth Dunlop, ably took over as editor from John O’ Connor and she’s been fun to work with as was the rest of the team.

Below is another of my cover photos featuring the sublime designs of Eva Zaisel and at 102 years of age, still going strong.

And here’s a few more. From left to right: Bacardi Building, Miami, Architect Jeff Silberstein’s home,  Carillon Hotel,  Leyva residence Miami Beach and the Motor Marina Inn in Fort lauderdale (and may she rest in peace too!)

I told Beth Dunlop afterwards that when one door closes another one opens…which when I look back now sounded so ridiculous and moronic, but the reason its a cliche is because of course: it is true!

So here’s to Home Miami and Home Fort Lauderdale. I hope that your incarnation was not in vain!

warmest regards and Arriverderci

Robin
